Utility company Dominion Energy has unveiled plans for more than a dozen new solar projects in Virginia, aiming to generate 772 megawatts of carbon-free electricity. This ambitious initiative is expected to power nearly 200,000 homes at peak output.
Dominion Energy’s Forward-Thinking Approach
Dominion Energy, headquartered in Richmond, Virginia, has presented a comprehensive strategy consisting of six solar projects with a total capacity of 337 megawatts. Additionally, they plan to secure 13 power-purchase agreements for independently owned solar projects, totaling 435 megawatts.
A Boost for Renewable Energy in Virginia
Upon regulatory approval, Dominion Energy’s proposed solar projects will position the company with an impressive total of over 4,600 megawatts of solar capacity in Virginia alone. This substantial figure will be sufficient to power more than 1.1 million homes during peak output.
Economic Benefits and Job Creation
Furthermore, the construction of these solar projects is expected to provide substantial economic benefits across the state, generating over $570 million in economic revenue. Additionally, this initiative will create an estimated 1,600 job opportunities.
Delving into Costs
Imposing a minimal cost on customers, the implementation of these projects would result in an approximate monthly increase of $1.54 for residential customers. It is important to note that this additional cost pales in comparison to the long-term benefits of reduced carbon emissions and the promotion of clean energy.
