Hotel workers in Los Angeles have gone on strike for the second time in two weeks, as thousands of housekeepers, cooks, dishwashers, and more demand higher wages. The strike, organized by their union, Unite Here Local 11, comes after contracts affecting 15,000 workers at over 60 hotels in the area expired at the end of June.

In the previous week, workers from almost 20 hotels participated in a three-day strike. Now, this second wave of strikes aims to intensify the pressure on hotel management. The workers currently earn an average hourly wage of $20 to $25 and are seeking an immediate increase of $5 per hour. However, the hotels have only offered half of that amount.

During the initial wave of strikes, which took place over the Fourth of July holiday, the workers picketed in downtown Los Angeles and Santa Monica. However, they temporarily returned to work on July 5 as the union called for a brief pause in the strike.

The continuation of these strikes underscores the workers’ determination to secure fair wages that reflect their value and contributions. As negotiations between the hotels and the union continue, it remains to be seen how this labor dispute will unfold.

Los Angeles Hotel Workers Continue to Strike

Thousands of Los Angeles hotel workers are currently on strike, with more joining every day. At least eight hotels near the Los Angeles International Airport have been affected, including popular brands like Hilton and Holiday Inn.

The only hotel that has managed to reach a tentative agreement with the union is the Westin Bonaventure Hotel & Suites in downtown Los Angeles.

In addition to increased wages, the union is also advocating for the establishment of a hospitality workforce housing fund and safer workloads for employees.

However, the bargaining group representing 44 of the hotels has expressed frustration over the union’s lack of response to scheduled meetings on July 14 and July 18. They argue that this delay is not only hurting their employees but also damaging Los Angeles’ reputation as a tourist destination.

“We offered dates because we want to meet and make progress toward a contract settlement,” expressed Keith Grossman, a spokesperson for the bargaining group.

The ongoing strike in the Los Angeles hotel industry highlights the growing tension between workers and management, drawing attention to important labor issues within the city.

Hotel Housekeeping Jobs: A Devastating Blow

From the archives (May 2023)

Amidst the unprecedented challenges brought on by the pandemic, the hotel industry has endured a severe blow. The number of housekeeping jobs, a vital component of hospitality services, has plummeted by a staggering 102,000. In an effort to illuminate the underlying circumstances of this distressing reality, we explore what exactly transpired.

The impact of the pandemic was swift and merciless, leaving countless sectors reeling in its wake. Hotel housekeeping, an integral part of the hospitality ecosystem, was not spared from its merciless grasp. The decline in jobs has resulted in a resounding blow to an industry that relies heavily on its dedicated housekeeping staff to ensure guests’ comfort and well-being.

The magnitude of this loss cannot be understated. Hundreds of thousands of hardworking individuals who once found stability and fulfillment in their roles have been abruptly cast aside. With their livelihoods disrupted, they now grapple with uncertainty and mounting challenges.

While adapting to the ever-changing circumstances brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, hotels have had to make unfathomable decisions. Unfortunately, reducing their workforce became an unavoidable reality. As a result, countless loyal and experienced employees found themselves bearing the brunt of these difficult choices.

Efforts are currently underway to address this distressing situation. The union, representing the affected employees, is actively engaging with the organizing committee to chart a path forward. Collaboration and dialogue will be instrumental in understanding the needs and desires of those most impacted by these trying times.

As we reflect upon the staggering decline of hotel housekeeping jobs, it is crucial to recognize the tremendous resilience and dedication displayed by this vital workforce. In the face of adversity, they persevered, ensuring that guests’ needs were met with unwavering commitment. It is our duty to acknowledge their invaluable contributions and explore avenues for support and recovery.
